Madan Singh Kaundal Tabla Master


Himachali folk music and culture is very rich in itself and also popular in the country. There are many classical singers and instrument players too who have brought laurels to the hill state. Madan Singh Kaundal is a popular name among Himachali instrument players. He is a master in playing Tabla. 54 years old Madan Singh Kaundal belongs to village Manju of Arki and presently giving his services as an instrument teacher in the Himachal Pradesh University’s Music Department. He got his primary education of music in his family. His father was a popular singer in the Bahal Principality and his mother was also a good singer. After the primary education he went to Prayag Sangeet Samiti Allahabad to pursue his education in Tabla playing.
Apart from playing tabla he also sings very well. Singing is his hobby from his childhood days so he has also taken the education of classical singing from the famous classical music teachers Gopal Das Garg and N.L. Garg. Presently he is also giving his services in All India Radio, Shimla as a contract base singer and tabla player. Recently he was invited by the J&K University to take interviews for the music lecturers. He has performed and played tabla with many renowned artists including Pandit Debu Chaudhary (sitar), Ustad Mushtak Ali Khan (sitar) Saroj Ghosh (sarod), Mahender Singh (thumari), Dr. Indrani Chakraborty (sitar), Pt. Sunil Mukherjee (sitar) and many others. His pupils are also very good teachers of music in different educational institutes.
Madan Kaundal has thanked Divya Himachal media Group to provide many platforms for Himachal’s talented people. He said that this media group has made seriously good efforts to make Himachali people confident so that they can perform well in the national and international competitions. He advised Himachali youth not to forget the classical music. “With the modernization of music, we should not forget that the classical music is the base of all types of light music, “he adds.
