Air of prosperity in Himachal has failed to bring mental peace along with. However, living standard of general public has considerably improved in the state but happiness is fading away. That is why, 1114 Himachalies ended their lives reportedly by committing suicide during 2012. Figures disclose that the trend of ending life is more evident in the youngsters of the state, which is posing a question mark on the so called prosperity and peace of the state. Figures show that 480 Himachali men and 925 women reportedly committed suicide in the last year. The number of people who ended their life in 2011 was 1112.

A district wise analysis reveals that most populated district Kangra of state is on the top position of suicide tally. Total 410 people of Kangra district opted death over life during 2012. 47 people each in district Solan and Una committed suicide during last year. 43 people of Mandi district also made part of this list. 40 people of district Shimla, 36 of district Sirmaur, 25 of district Hamirpur, 31 of Bilaspur, nine of Chamba and seven people each of Kullu and Kinnaur districts committed suicide during last year. A youngster of district Lahaul and Spiti also ended his life in 2012.

Question Mark on Prosperity

Himachal Pradesh is among most prosperous states of India but growing number of suicides has given enough fodder to experts to find out the real cause of this growing unrest. They believe that this trend is shocking for a state which is galloping in every social sector along with quality education. The most disturbing fact is that those youngsters are in majority in this list who are in the age group of students or early career seekers. A study reveals that there are 67% unmarried people who themselves ended their lives for unspecific reasons.

Reasons Behind Decision

Experts believe that there are some general cases which can prompt people specifically youngsters to end their life. These include family conditions, illicit relations, failure in examination, drug addiction, poverty, unemployment, cancellation of marriage, pettydomestic quarrels between husband and wife, unmatches marriage and failures in love affairs etc.

Means to End Life

It has been found that most of people use poison to end their life. Then comes hanging by neck. Women also choose to burn themselves. A few of them choose to jump down from a hill or to get drown.
