Establish Old Age Homes in Every District of Himachal
Hari Miatter Bhagi
Himachal has rich culture and traditions and had a strong social fabric in which elderly people were looked after properly in joint family system. However families are disintegrating under changing circumstances thus leading to a situation in which there is no one to look after elders. It necessitates the need to establish more old age homes in every district of the state. Such homes should be located at places that offer natural and healthy environment besides having facilities to provide homely conditions and entertainment. They should also be engaged in useful activities like holding of meetings so that they can also share their experiences and problems with others. There could be many professionals living in such old age homes whose expertise could be used for social service also. In today’s scenario, children are serving at faraway places and even abroad form their native places thus leaving their parents alone back home. There is no one to look after them and take care of their small requirements. Such elders can spend good time in old age homes and share their happiness and sorrows with other inmates. It is a harsh reality that younger generation will have ample money but no time to look after their old parents. Keeping all such circumstances in view there is increasing need to open old age homes equipped with all facilities. The government should take initiative in this direction as it would ensure their proper functioning because there have been reports of irregularities committed in old age hoe being run by non-government organisations and other bodies. Such a facility will rejuvenate elders to live peaceful and tension free life
