Women not Safe in Himachal

As Himachal is also celebrating another women’s day, it is high time to have a look at the condition of Himachali women in this hill state. Official figures related to crime against women in the state clearly show that much more needs to be done in order to provide them their natural rights in general and security in particular. The figures state that as many as 28 women have been killed in Himachal in 2013 while 250 others have been raped. That is not all about brutality as 288 women have also been kidnapped during one year and another 328 were tortured. On the other hand, 493 women were sexually attacked with the intention of rape while 105 were sexually abused. As a whole the police records reveal that 1,596 women of the state suffered only for their innocence during 365 days of 2013. On the same line, ongoing year also can’t be expected to be a good for the half of the population in Himachal, as one case of murder, 16 of rape, 14 of kidnapping, 25 of molestation and 30 of cruelty have been registered in January, 2014. While crime against women is on the rise, people believe that the police department is lacking commitment in this regard. Reason is that women are not safe even in their own homes. However, there is a ray of hope and that is Himachali women are not taking crime as their destiny. That is why they are approaching the police to seek justice.

Police Alert a Bit

In spite of facing allegations, the police department of Himachal has tightened its grip a bit against such crimes after ill-famous rape case of Delhi. That is why anti-human trafficking cells have been opened at district level along with women cell. Women employees have been appointed to help victims who happen to approach police stations for justice. Women cops have been appointed for patrolling in markets to keep an eye on eve teasers. On the last Women’s Day, the state police department had constituted a women quick action group along with a watch cell. The department is according priority to investigate all crimes related to women. However people believe that department should take more strict actions to safeguard Himachali women in all respects.
