Himachal’s Women Hockey Team Enters National Division A

 Himachal This WeekAssam clinched the 4th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2014 (Division B) by beating Himachal Pradesh in a hard fought final by 3-2 at the Aish Bagh Stadium in Bhopal. Though Himachal could not emerge as winner but it got entry into the National Hockey Championship (Division A) in which eight teams would participate. It is for the first time after 1996 when Himachal got a chance to play in Division A championship. In the final match, Himachal Pradesh gave a started on a promising note when Ravita Chauhan opened team’s account in 4th minute of the game. Assam took no time in returning the favour and scored two goals back to back in the 6th and 8th minutes through Dolly Yadav and Maully Yadav, respectively.  Himachal trailed by 2-1 at half time. Assam’s third goal came through captain Minni in 44th minute and increased the lead further to by 3-1. Himachal Pradesh’s Balwinder Rana scored in 59th minute but the team failed to get further goals and lost to Assam by 3-2. In another  match, Delhi defeated Tamil Nadu by 2-0 and secured the third position in the championship.

Himachal Athletes Dazzle in Special Olympic National Event

 Himachal This WeekHimachal athletes proved their mettle by winning 20 medals in the recently concluded Special Olympics National Athletics Championships, organised by the Special Olympics Bharat (SOB) in New Delhi. A total of 12 athletes participated in this championship from Himachal, including six girls and six boys. In different games athletes won eight golds, eight silvers and four bronze medals. Coach Anuradha Sharma, Murali Lal and Vinod Kumar led Himachal team. Special children from Chetna Association of Bilaspur were also included in Himachali team and they won six medals during the championship.  Around 800 athletes, 150 coaches and 150 volunteers from 26 states participated in the National Athletics Championship. Himachali players proved their superiority in long-jump, shot-put, broad-jump and softball. Coach Anuradha Sharma told that three players from Bilaspur Ashish Kumar, Sunil Kumari and Radha Devi clinched seven gold medals. Other medal winners included Palak (three golds), Vishakha (two golds), Sunil Kumari (two golds), Nandini (one silver), Ashish (three silvers), Panna Lal (one silver), Rahul Thakur (one silver and two bronze) and Anchal (one bronze).

 Himachal This WeekHimachal’s weightlifter, Shivali Sharma proved her mettle in the recently concluded All India Inter-University Weightlifting Championship by winning a silver medal. She participated in this championship while representing Panjab University, Chandigarh. Now Shivali will participate in Open National Weightlifting Championship to be held from March 28 at Nagpur. She will represent Himachal in this championship. In the inter-university championship, she lifted 185 kg weight and got a silver medal. While talking to anni this week Shivani told that she practiced hard for this championship and preparing to participate in national weightlifting championship.
