‘Art is My Passion’

Prem singh  artist
HIMACHAL THIS WEEKHimachal is the land of Gods and Goddesses. The name comes from the rich culture of ritualistic worship and the exhaustive list of gods. An artisan of Jhandutta in Bilaspur has proved his mettle in the field of making idols of Gods and Goddesses of Himachal. Prem Singh’s idols appear so lively that anybody is fascinated towards his art and creativity which he makes with thermocol and RCC. Although his financial position is not so good but yet he tries to to pursue his passion under testing times and continuously flaunts his talent of making artifacts. His collection of idols includes goddesses of Himachal, including Sheranwali mata, Lord Shiva, Hanuman, Sai Baba, Bhairon Baba and many others. He has shown his expertise in making artifacts with thermocol. Born in March 1956, Prem Singh belongs to an ordinary family. He is a tailor by profession, but when he gets free time he utilises that by making artifacts. Prem Singh told Himachal This Week that “different obstacles, including financial constraints, came in my way while pursuing my passion of making artifacts but that never deterred me and I am continuously making artifacts for my satisfaction. My art is my passion”. He organised two exhibitions of his idols made of thermocol, without any support in Bilaspur and Ghumarwin. He urged the Himachal government that they should promote the local artists for preserving the culture and ancient traditions of the state.
