The battle against the mining mafia that was started by the famous environmentalist and National Maharani Lakshmi Bai Award winner Kinkari Devi seems to have ended with her. Kinkari Devi, who was born in 1940 in a small village of Sirmaur, Sangrah, started her battle against mining mafia in 70s. She was married to Shyamu nearby her village at the age of 13. She was totally illiterate but yet she had filed a complaint in the High Court against illegal and unscientific mining in Sirmaur in 1987. She had fought the case in High Court for almost five years and won it also. .
Finally in 1992, the High Court decided in favour of Kinkari Devi and established a special monitoring committee to make the report on Mining Area. After the report was presented, the State High Court completely banned the unscientific and illegal mining in the state. After this decision, then state government had enacted Kinkari Devi Environment and Mining Protection Act to save the environment. 107 mines had been closed after implementation of this act in Sirmaur district. 1998 year was a good year for Kinkari Devi as she was in headlines of entire national and international media. She was the only Indian illiterate woman who got a chance to address women with Hillary Clinton on the occasion of the International Women Day
